RTC DS3231 is a low-cost, extremely accurate I2C real-time clock (Precision Real Time Clock Module ), with an integrated temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) and crystal.

The DS3231 AT24C32 Real Time Clock Module adds timestamp and event scheduling information to your microcontroller projects.

DS3231 Precision RTC generates seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month and year, and provides timekeeping until 2100 while compensating for leap years.

The integration of the crystal resonator enhances the long-term accuracy of the device as well as reduces the piece-part count in a manufacturing line.

DS3231 Precision Real Time Clock Module operates in either the 24-hour or 12-hour format with an AM/PM indicator. Two programmable time-of-day alarms and a programmable square-wave output are provided. Address and data are transferred serially through an I2C bidirectional bus.

A precision temperature-compensated voltage reference and comparator circuit monitors the status of VCC to detect power failures, to provide a reset output and to automatically switch to the backup supply when necessary. Additionally, the RST pin is monitored as a pushbutton input for generating a μP reset.

The AT24C32 provides 32,768 bits of serial electrically erasable and programmable read only memory (EEPROM) organized as 4096 words of 8 bits each.

RTC DS3231 AT24C32 i2C Module is a six terminal device, out of them two pins are not compulsory to use. So we have mainly four pins. These four pins are given out on other side of module sharing the same name.

Real Time Clock Module DS3231 can work on either 3.3 or 5 V which makes it suitable for many development platforms or microcontrollers. The battery input is 3V and a typical CR2032 3V battery can power the module and maintain the information for more than a year.

DS3231 RTC module Pinout

The DS3231 RTC module has total 6 pins that interface it to the outside world. The connections are as follows:

  • 32K pin outputs the stable(temperature compensated) and accurate reference clock.
  • SQW pin outputs a nice square wave at either 1Hz, 4kHz, 8kHz or 32kHz and can be handled programmatically. This can further use as an interrupt due to alarm condition in many time-based applications.
  • SCL is a serial clock pin for I2C interface.
  • SDA is a serial data pin for I2C interface.
  • VCC pin supplies power for the module. It can be anywhere between 3.3V to 5.5V.
  • GND is a ground pin.

DS3231 RTC module Battery Backup: –

The DS3231 incorporates a battery input, and maintains accurate timekeeping when main power to the device is interrupted.

The built-in power-sense circuit continuously monitors the status of VCC to detect power failures and automatically switches to the backup supply. So, you need not worry about power outages, your MCU can still keep track of time.

The bottom side of the board holds a battery holder for 20mm 3V lithium coin cells. Any CR2032 battery can fit well.

DS3231 RTC module Interface: –

The I2C interface is accessible whenever either VCC or VBAT is at a valid level. If a microcontroller connected to the DS3231 resets because of a loss of VCC or other event, it is possible that the microcontroller and DS3231 I2C communications could become unsynchronized, e.g., the microcontroller resets while reading data from the DS3231.

When the microcontroller resets, the DS3231 I2C interface may be placed into a known state by toggling SCL until SDA is observed to be at a high level. At that point the microcontroller should pull SDA low while SCL is high, generating a START condition.

DS3231 RTC module chip

At the heart of the module is a low-cost, extremely accurate RTC chip from Maxim –DS3231. It manages all timekeeping functions and features a simple two-wire I2C interface which can be easily interfaced with any microcontroller of your choice.

The chip maintains seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year information. The date at the end of the month is automatically adjusted for months with fewer than 31 days, including corrections for leap year (valid up to 2100).

The clock operates in either the 24-hour or 12-hour format with an AM/PM indicator. It also provides two programmable time-of-day alarms.
