The Micro SD Card Reader Module has a 3.3V regulator which makes it super easy to use with 5V devices like Arduino. The pin out is directly compatible with Arduino and also can be used with other microcontrollers. It allow us to add mass storage and data logging to our project. The Card Reader Module contains two main components that make it undoubtedly easy to add data logging to your next Arduino project:

Often times, we have the need for a way to store data in our projects, and most of the time, the EEPROM which comes readily to mind has a limited storage capacity, and issues with the format and nature of data it can hold. All this and more makes it probably not the best for storing data like text, CSV, audio, video or image files. To get around this we could use an SD card to store the data, and remove the card when we need to view on some other platform etc. That is why today’s project is focusing on how to interface an SD card module with an Arduino.

This Card Reader Module has SPI interface which is compatible with any SD card and it use 5V or 3.3V power supply which is compatible with Arduino UNO/Mega.

Micro SD Card Reader Module Pin Description & Connections

This module uses the standard SPI interface for communication, which involve SPI buses, MISO, MOSI, SCK, and a CS signal pin. through programming, the data can easily be read and wrote into SD Card by using the Arduino or other microcontrollers.

  • CS (chip select)
  • SCK (serial clock)
  • MOSI (master out slave in)
  • VCC (3.3V or 5V)
  • GND (ground)

Simple connection between Micro SD Card Module and Arduino UNO.

  • Connect VCC with 5V in the Arduino.
  • Then, connect the GND of SD card to the ground of Arduino.
  • Connect CS to pin 14
  • Connect SCK to pin 13
  • MOSI connect to the pin 11
  • Lastly, connect MISO to pin 12
