The IRF840 is an N-channel power MOSFET that is commonly used in high-voltage applications. Power Mosfet IRF840 has a maximum drain-source voltage of 500V and a continuous drain current of 8A.

The IRF840 also has a low on-resistance of 0.85 ohms, which makes it suitable for switching high-power loads. This power mosfet is designed for high voltage, high speed power switching applications such as switching regulators, converters, solenoid and relay drivers.
This Power Mosfet IRF840 is a silicon-gate MOSFET, which means that it uses a silicon semiconductor to control the flow of current & has a typical switching speed of 100 nanoseconds, which means that it can turn on or off in 100 nanoseconds. This is fast enough for many applications, such as motor control and power switching

The IRF840 also has a low on-resistance, which means that it can switch high currents with minimal losses. This makes it a good choice for applications where high power is require, such as welding machines and RF amplifiers.

IRF840 power MOSFET has a gate threshold voltage of 10V. This means that in order to turn on the MOSFET, the gate voltage must be at least 10V. If the gate voltage is less than 10V, the MOSFET will be turned off.

Power Mosfet IRF840 can also turn on by applying a pulse of gate voltage that is greater than 10V. This is called pulse-width modulation (PWM). PWM is a technique that is used to control the power that is delivered to a load.

The IRF840 MOSFET is a versatile and powerful MOSFET that can use in a wide variety of applications. It is a reliable and affordable choice for high-voltage switching applications.

Features : –

The IRF840 is an N-Channel Power MOSFET which can switch loads up to 500V. The Mosfet could switch loads that consume up to 8A, it can turn on by providing a gate threshold voltage of 10V across the Gate and Source pin. Since the MOSFET is for switching high current high voltage loads it has a relatively high gate voltage, hence cannot be used directly with an I/O pin of a CPU.

The IRF840 power MOSFET is a versatile and powerful device that offers a number of benefits, including:

  • High voltage and current ratings: The IRF840 can withstand up to 500V and can switch up to 8A of current. This makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, including motor control, power supplies, and inverters.
  • Low on-resistance: The on-resistance of the IRF840 is only 0.85 ohms. This means that it can switch high currents with minimal losses, which makes it a good choice for applications where efficiency is important.
  • Fast switching speed: The IRF840 has a typical switching speed of 100 nanoseconds. This means that it can turn on or off very quickly, which is important for applications that require high-speed switching.
  • Rugged design: The IRF840 is designed to withstand harsh environments. It has a high thermal rating and is protected against overvoltage and overcurrent conditions.
  • Cost-effectiveness: The IRF840 is a relatively inexpensive device, which makes it a good choice for budget-minded applications.

IRF840 N-Channel Power MOSFET Pin Descriptions : –

One considerable disadvantage of the IRF840 Mosfet is its high on-resistance (RDS) value which is about 0.85 ohms. Hence this mosfet cannot use in applications where high switching efficiency  required. The Mosfet requires a driver circuit to provide 10V to the gate pin of this Mosfet the simplest driver circuit can be build using a transistor. It is relatively cheap and has very low thermal resistance, added to this the mosfet also has good switching speeds and hence can use in DC-DC converter circuits. Here is the pin description of the IRF840 N-channel 8A 500V Power MOSFET:

  • Drain (D): The drain pin is the output of the MOSFET. It is connect to the load that the MOSFET is controlling.
  • Source (S): The source pin is the input of the MOSFET. It is connect to the ground or the negative voltage rail.
  • Gate (G): The gate pin is use to control the MOSFET. A positive voltage applied to the gate will turn the MOSFET on, while a negative voltage will turn it off.
