The MQ9 Gas Sensor is a semiconductor sensor that is used to detect Combustible Gas like carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). MQ9 is a relatively inexpensive sensor that is easy to use and can be integrated into a variety of applications.

MQ9 gas sensor has high sensitity to Carbon Monoxide, Methane and LPG. The sensor can use to detect different gases contains CO and combustible gases, with low cost and suitable for different application.

Sensitive material of MQ9 Gas Sensor is SnO2, which with lower conductivity in clean air. It make detection by method of cycle high and low temperature, and detect CO when low temperature (heated by 1.5V).

MQ9 Gas Sensor works by measuring the change in conductivity of a tin dioxide (SnO2) sensor element as it exposed to different gases. In clean air, the SnO2 sensor element has a low conductivity. However, when it is exposed to CO, CH4, or LPG, the sensor element’s conductivity increases. The amount of increase in conductivity is proportional to the concentration of the gas in the air.

The sensor’s conductivity is more higher along with the gas concentration rising. When high temperature (heated by 5.0V), it detects Methane, Propane etc combustible gas and cleans the other gases adsorbed under low temperature.

The MQ9 gas sensor requires a supply voltage of 5V. The sensor has two heating pins that are meant to be operated in a dual voltage cycle: 5 V across the pins for 60 seconds to heat the sensor and then 1.5 V for 90 seconds while reading the sensor. The sensor also has an analog output pin that can use to measure the change in conductivity of the sensor element.
