The USB Host Shield Revision 2.0 for Arduino allows you to connect a USB device to your Arduino board. USB Host Shield Revision 2.0 is based on the MAX3421E, which is a USB peripheral / host controller containing the digital logic and analog circuitry necessary to implement a full-speed USB peripheral or a full / low speed host compliant to USB specification rev 2.0.

This is based on revision 2.0 of USB Host Shield. Thanks to new interface layout it is now compatible with more Arduinos but also Mega and Mega 2560 work with Standard variant of this shield out of the box. No more SPI re-wiring and code modifications – just solder included stackable connectors (2×3 ICSP connector’s female side should be facing down), plug and play!

USB Host Shield Revision 2.0 adds USB Host capabilities to the popular Arduino platform. C Software support for new devices is constantly added; at the moment, code for USB keyboard and PS3 controller are ready with Bluetooth and digital cameras in the works. This means you could use your Arduino to interface with and control any USB slave device – thumb drives, digital cameras, Bluetooth dongles, and much more.

This USB Host Shield Revision 2.0 will work with standard (dual 5/3.3V) and 3.3V-only (Arduino Pro) boards. This includes anything from the Arduino Uno, Mega and Leonardo to mention a few.
Arduino clones with standard connector layout, including ICSP connector, should work.
Even with the proper connections made you can also use the shield with a non-compliant Arduino form-factored board such as the Sanguino.

Support for several popular device classes has been added. Device initialization and event handling is now moved to a library specific to device class, therefore user application doesn’t need to do this and only needs to process actual device data.
