5V Stepper Motor 28BYJ-48 is a unipolar 5V stepper motor that takes electrical signals as input and rotates by converting these input signals into the mechanical rotation. It has 4 stationary coils rated at +5V.

These coils are known as a stator and make a ring around the rotor. It has a 1/64 reduction gear set and therefore moves in precise 512 steps per revolution.

These motors are silent in comparison to other DC motors and servo motors. You can achieve positional control easily without needing extra circuitry and components.

One of the inexpensive way to learn about stepper motors is to use 28BYJ-48 stepper motors. They usually come with a ULN2003 based driver board which makes them super easy to use.

ULN2003 Driver Module

The ULN2003 Driver Module is one of the most common motor driver ICs, consisting of an array of 7 Darlington transistor pairs, each pair is capable of driving loads of up to 500mA and 50V. Four out of seven pairs are used on this board.

The board has a connector that mates the motor wires perfectly which makes it very easy to connect the motor to the board. There are also connections for four control inputs as well as power supply connections.

The board has four LEDs that show activity on the four control input lines (to indicate stepping state). They provide a nice visual when stepping. The board also comes with an ON/OFF jumper to isolate power to the stepper Motor.

The voltage range for any load is 50V but the current range is 500mA which could be increased by combining the multiple output pins. ULN2003 Driver Module comes with internal safety protection from back emf. It has an internal flyback protection system which gives protection to the device.

The ULN2003 stepper motor driver board allows you to easily control the 28BYJ-48 stepper motor from a microcontroller, like the Arduino Uno. One side of the board side has a 5 wire socket where the cable from the stepper motor hooks up and 4 LEDs to indicate which coil is currently powered.

The motor cable only goes in one way, which always helps.UNL2003 board On the side you have a motor on / off jumper (keep it on to enable power to the stepper). The two pins below the 4 resistors, is where you provide power to the stepper.
