L293D Motor Driver Module is a medium power motor driver perfect for driving DC Motors and Stepper Motors. It uses the popular L293D motor driver IC.

It can drive 4 DC motors on and off, or drive 2 DC motors with directional and speed control.

L293D motor driver shield is a driver board based on L293 IC, which can drive 4 DC motors and 2 stepper or Servo motors at the same time.

Each channel of this module has the maximum current of 1.2A and doesn’t work if the voltage is more than 25v or less than 4.5v.

L293D Motor Driver Module acts as an interface between the motors and the control circuits. Motor require high amount of current whereas the controller circuit works on low current signals.

So the function of motor drivers is to take a low-current control signal and then turn it into a higher-current signal that can drive a motor

One of the easiest and inexpensive way to control stepper motors is to interface L293D Motor Driver IC with Arduino. It can control both speed and spinning direction of any Unipolar stepper motor like 28BYJ-48 or Bipolar stepper motor like NEMA 17.

The L293D is a dual-channel H-Bridge motor driver capable of driving a pair of DC motors or single stepper motor.

As the shield comes with two L293D motor driver chipsets, that means it can individually drive up to four DC motors making it ideal for building four-wheel robot platforms.

L293D Motor Driver Module Specifications: –

  • 2 connections for 5V ‘hobby’ servos connected to the Arduino’s high-resolution dedicated timer
  • 4 H-Bridges: L293D chipset provides 0.6A per bridge (1.2A peak) with thermal shutdown protection, internal kickback protection diodes. Can run motors on 4.5VDC to 25VDC.

L293D Motor Driver IC

The L293D is a dual-channel H-Bridge motor driver. A single IC is able to control two DC motors or one stepper motor. The L293D is designed to provide bidirectional drive currents of up to 600-mA at voltages from 4.5 V to 36 V. and Peak Output Current 1.2 A Per Channel. This IC has two enable inputs, these are provided to enable or disable the device independently of the input signals.

The motor driver shield has two L293D motor driver IC. So, the L293d shield able to control four DC motors or one stepper motor.

74HC595 Shift Register IC

The 74HC595 is a shift resistor IC. This IC has an 8-bit shift register and an 8-bit D-type latch with three state parallel outputs. This shift register can accept serial data and provides a serial output. Also, it can provide parallel data to the 8-bit latch. The shift register and latch have independent clock inputs.

The shield has a 74HC595 shift register that extends Arduino 4 digital pins to the 8 direction control pins of two L293D chips.

Reset Switch: –

The RESET is nothing but the Arduino reset button. This switch works same as the Arduino reset and it is used to reset the Arduino board. It just brought up top for easy to use purpose.

Power LED: –

The on-board Power LED indicates the motor’s power supply. If the power supply is on the LED is turned on, the motor will work well. If the LED will not ON, it means the power supply is OFF. So, the motors will not be working.

L293D Motor Driver Module external power:-

The shield has a 2-pin terminal block for External Power Supply. It used to DC power supply for motors. It also can be used to the power supply to the Arduino board, it possible by the “Power Supply Selection Jumper”.

Two servo motors, Four DC Motors and Two stepper motor connections can be found on this motor driver shield. At the top left corner you can view two three pin headers. You will be able to connect two servo motors at these terminals as a single servo motor comes with three wires that need to be connected.

At both the left and right sides you can view five pin terminals. We will be able to connect four DC motors rated at 4.5-25 V at these terminals. These are labelled M1, M2, M3 and M4. Additionally, You can also connect two unipolar/bipolar stepper motors at these terminals instead. The M1,M2 terminals will connect stepper motor 1 and M3,M4 will connect stepper motor 2.

If using a unipolar stepper motor the GND terminals will be connected to the center taps of the stepper motors.

One important point to note here is that this driver shield supports motors with voltages between 4.5-25V only. The maximum current will be 1.2A.
